Filled to the brim with famous faces, David O. Russell creates a comedic thriller just before the start of World War II that sometimes feels too ambitious.
War veterans Burt (Christian Bale) and Harold (John David Washington) are hired to investigate the mysterious death of their former General Bill Meekings (Ed Begley Jr.). With the aid of their friend and former nurse Valerie (Margot Robbie), they begin to uncover a plot against the U.S. government.
The film is brilliantly stylized with incredible costumes, sets, music, cinematography and performances. With so many characters, it becomes confusing on how everything connects. A shifting tone throughout also causes ups and downs.
However, Bale, Robbie and Washington are fantastic leads in this all-star cast, and Robert De Niro, Rami Malek and Anya Taylor-Joy all have memorable moments.
Final say: Be ready to process everything. ★★★☆☆
