Winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, Sense and Sensibility made actress Emma Thompson the only person in history to win Oscars for both writing and acting (for her earlier work in Howards End).
Sisters Elinor (Thompson) and Marianne Dashwood (Kate Winslet) are forced out of their home and fortune when their father (Tom Wilkinson) dies and leaves the money to his son, their half-brother, John (James Fleet). Both sisters find love, but circumstances force the potential relationships apart.
Thompson and Winslet are divine and work perfectly together while also being strong separately. Elinor’s romance with Edward (Hugh Grant) will have you cheering, while watching two men compete for Marianne is entertaining with Winslet showing girlish charm.
The film spectacularly balances the drama and comedy amongst the romance with colorful characters and strong writing.
Final say: Quite sensible. ★★★★★
