With electric solo performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon that are beautifully combined with their strong chemistry, Walk the Line doesn’t just inform us about one country legend but two.

After serving time in the military, Johnny Cash (Phoenix) convinces a local music producer to record his band. As his success grows, Johnny falls into drugs, and his marriage to Vivian (Ginnifer Goodwin) implodes as he falls for June Carter (Witherspoon).

Based on Cash’s two autobiographies, Walk the Line doesn’t shy away from the drugs, alcohol and women that created a bad public image for the star. Instead, it embraces his journey as he becomes a star.

Phoenix is fantastic with his gravelly voice and acting range, but it’s Witherspoon who steals the show as she balances June’s comedy alongside her personal drama.

Final say: Burning on fire. ★★★★★
