Hitting the social commentary a bit too hard on the nose, Suburbicon can’t quite decide what kind of movie it wants to be and leaves you more disappointed than satisfied.
When the black Mayers family moves into an all-white neighborhood in 1959, their appearance drives the town into hysteria. Meanwhile, the Lodge family experiences a home intrusion that ends with Rose’s (Julianne Moore) death.
You’ll quickly realize the irony of the crime in the Lodge home going unnoticed because of people focused on the peaceful Mayers family. Once it hits you, the statement it’s making weakens.
Going from crime to drama to comedy without perfecting any of the genres, the story feels lost and lets its great cast – Oscar Isaac is phenomenal for the first two-thirds of his role – get muddled.
Final say: Doesn’t treat the audience smartly. ★★☆☆☆
