Though marketed as a psychological thriller, The Beguiled has such a slow pace that it turns solely into a Gothic drama that’s fine but not overly thrilling.
During the Civil War, Amy (Oona Laurence) finds Union Corporal John McBurney (Colin Farrell) wounded in the woods. She takes him to the girls’ school she lives at run by Miss Martha (Nicole Kidman) and teacher Edwina (Kirsten Dunst). As he heals, the women ponder what to do with him.
Featuring a small ensemble cast, everyone was perfectly picked for their roles. Farrell is charming yet conniving, Kidman shows strength and power, Dunst is sweet but naïve and Elle Fanning is young and full of passion.
The film is shot beautifully and appreciates the southern style of the home, which easily feels separated from the world.
Final say: Pacing doesn’t ruin the beauty. ★★★★☆
