As a sequel to Minions and a prequel to the Despicable Me series, Minions: The Rise of Gru is a great connector featuring funky ‘70s style and a big adventure.
When Vicious 6 leader Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin) is presumed dead, 11-year-old Gru (Steve Carell) applies to take his position. After stealing the Zodiac Stone, Gru is kidnapped and it’s up to the Minions (Pierre Coffin) to save him.
While keeping the Minions reckless, this film also helps develop them as vital sidekicks. Using Michelle Yeoh as the voice of their Kung Fu instructor is the perfect choice based on the actresses’ background.
Stylistically, this film sets it apart from its universe with the music, Chinese influences and enhanced coloring. The story may feel similar, but the look is all its own.
Final say: Rise for Gru and his Minions. ★★★★☆
