Director Julie Taymor takes the life of Frida Kahlo and molds it into a film that is just as much a piece of art itself.
At 18, Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek) is involved in an accident that leaves her temporarily paralyzed. Frida goes to Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina) for a professional opinion on her paintings and they strike up a friendship, which leads to romance. Their relationship becomes volatile as Frida’s body starts breaking down.
Kahlo would be proud of this film. It doesn’t shy away from the trauma and pain she experienced throughout life. As Frida goes through important parts of life, we get to see it through her eyes in an artistic fashion that only Taymor could bring to the screen. Hayek is passionate and mesmerizing as Frida.
Final say: The only way to show this artist’s life. ★★★★★
