A thrilling conclusion to the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, At World’s End is a visual spectacle despite a muddy storyline packed with too many characters.

To free the goddess Calypso (Naomie Harris) and defeat Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander), Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) needs to be saved from Davy Jones’ Locker. However, Beckett has control of Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and is intent on extinguishing piracy.

As with the previous two films, At World’s End benefits from strong performances from its cast, namely Depp, Nighy, Geoffrey Rush and Keira Knightley. The costumes, art direction and visual effects add to the intrigue that makes this a must-watch.

However, there is so much happening that it’s hard to keep up. The first Pirates had a contained storyline, but its sequels have grown far past a concise narrative.

Final say: Breathtaking confusion. ★★★☆☆
