Serving as a prequel to most of the Marvel movies, Captain Marvel creates a new hero while giving an early look at S.H.I.E.L.D.

Vers (Brie Larson) has visions of an older woman but can’t make a connection. When a mission lands her on Earth, Vers teams up with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to fight the Kree alien race and discovers she was a human named Carol Danvers working with Wendy Lawson (Annette Bening).

Larson shows incredible strength and enough humorous sass as Carol that she easily falls into the lineup of Marvel heroes. While the de-aging works mostly well on Jackson, the same can’t be said for the younger Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).

The film takes risks and packs a good twist just over midway through, which will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

Final say: Marvel-ous. ★★★★☆
