Employing several twists that continue to final moments of the film, Side Effects becomes an exciting psychological thriller even with its bleak coloring.
Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) enters a deep depression after her husband Martin (Channing Tatum) is released from prison. Her psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) treats her with an experimental drug on the advice of Dr. Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones). When a side effect causes Emily to murder Martin, Dr. Banks dives into her case.
Law is interesting to watch as he spirals. You’ll be rooting for him, even when you think he’s pushing too hard.
The twists in Scott Z. Burns’ script are phenomenal and director Steven Soderbergh knows how to lure you away from the truth so when the bomb drops, it feels like a shock.
Final say: Side Effects makes a great main feature. ★★★★☆
