Film: Tammy and the Bachelor

Opened: June 14. 1957

Directed by: Joseph Pevney

Starring: Debbie Reynolds, Leslie Nielsen, Walter Brennan, Mala Powers, Sidney Blackmer, Mildred Natwick, Fay Wray, Philip Ober, Craig Hill & Louise Beavers

In a lead role that could’ve entered the annoying realm, Debbie Reynolds is effortlessly charming in the titular female role of Tammy and the Bachelor.

Tammy and her grandpa (Walter Brennan) pull Peter (Leslie Nielsen) out of a wreck in the water on their property. After Peter is nursed back to health and grandpa goes to jail, Tammy goes to Peter’s home. While hesitant, Peter’s family let Tammy stay until she can get back on her feet.

The character of Tammy is naïve and excited, which Reynolds can portray without problem. Falling for Peter is easy with the Nielsen’s portrayal. However, some of Reynolds’ best scene work is opposite Mildred Natwick as the supportive Aunt Renie and Fay Wray as the disapproving Mrs. Brent.

Reynolds’ song of longing is beautifully written and performed.

Final say: Tammy is a feel-good breeze. ★★★★☆
