With the Minions becoming a fan favorite of the Despicable Me franchise, it’s no surprise that they’d get their own spin-off. This origin story has immense fun in creating their time before Gru (Steve Carell).
After years of failing to find a master, Kevin, Stuart and Bob (all voiced by Pierre Coffin) go on a journey to find their true evil leader. At Villain-Con, they meet supervillain Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock) who employs them to steal the crown of Queen Elizabeth II (Jennifer Saunders) so she can be queen.
Though one would think the Minion’s gibberish would become tiresome, it’s continually entertaining. Seeing how the Minions have survived time is enjoyable.
Scarlet is a great villain who fits in with the other Despicable Me villains well. The film remains true to the tone of the series.
Final say: Minions rule. ★★★★☆
