In its third outing, the Despicable Me franchise contains a lot of heart and jokes galore even if it isn’t furthering the series.

Unable to stop Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker), Gru (Steve Carell) and Lucy (Kristen Wiig) are fired from the Anti-Villain League. When Gru learns about his long-lost twin brother, Dru (also Carell), the pair team up to steal the Dumont diamond from Balthazar.

Family is at the film’s core. Gru and Dru’s bonding is great, but the best moments come from Lucy navigating her way as a new mom to Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Nev Scharrel). When Agnes calls Lucy “mom,” even the coldest of hearts will melt.

The story is a bit all over the place and doesn’t quite stand up to its predecessors.

Final say: Fans of the series will love it. ★★★☆☆
