Hamlet, one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, get a wonderfully updated look with modern dress as Andrew Scott leads the cast with a haunting performance.

When Prince Hamlet (Scott) returns home, he finds his father King Hamlet (David Rintoul) is dead and that his mother Gertrude (Juliet Stevenson) has married his uncle, Claudius (Angus Wright). The ghost of Hamlet’s father visits him and confirms he’s been murdered and asks Hamlet to avenge his death.

Scott takes the script and makes it fully his own. You can see the thought behind each of the words he’s saying as he brings a softness, yet fully dives into the madness that encompasses Hamlet.

Jessica Brown Findlay is also a standout as Ophelia. When Ophelia descends into her craziness, being almost confined to a wheelchair makes it more believable.

Final say: A brilliant revival. ★★★★★
