Though its themes are more fashioned for adults than children, Pocahontas stands out amongst the most gorgeous of Disney’s animated films.
Governor Ratcliffe (David Ogden Stiers) leads an expedition to what would become Virginia in search of gold. Pocahontas (Irene Bedard & Judy Kuhn) is looking for her path when she meets settler John Smith (Mel Gibson). Together, they discover their differences aren’t so large.
Though there are extreme historical inaccuracies, Pocahontas benefits from its real-life origins and a cast that reflects the Native American characters they’re playing. Showing the struggle of both sides not willing to learn from each other reflects society to this day.
With some quiet moments, the rich animation allows for beautiful scenes. The score by Alan Menken enhances these moments and Menken’s songs with Stephen Schwartz’s lyrics are iconic.
Final say: Pocahontas flies free. ★★★★☆
