A story of triumph and kindness made Babe one of 1995’s biggest movies. And though it’s a kid’s film about a talking pig, it manages to warm the hearts of old and young alike.

When Arthur Hoggett (James Cromwell) correctly guesses the weight of a pig at a county fair, he wins him as a prize. Sheepdog Fly (Miriam Margolyes) names the pig Babe (Christine Cavanaugh). Babe has a strong connection with the sheep and is entered in a local sheepherding competition.

There’s purity radiating from Babe from the moment he appears on screen. Never once does this go away, despite his attempts to be a mean “sheep-pig.”

Some content will go right over kid’s heads, as it’s meant to. The talking animals will entertain children, while the humanity will keep adults invested.

Final say: Don’t count the pig out. ★★★★☆
