Film: Maleficent

Opened: May 30, 2014

Directed by: Robert Stromberg

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, Sam Riley, Brenton Thwaites, Kenneth Cranham, Hannah New, Isobelle Molloy, Michael Higgins & Janet McTeer

At the beginning of Maleficent, the narrator (Janet McTeer) reveals the story we know is not true. However, the redemption arc for the titular character isn’t what fans of the ultimate Disney villain want to see.

When Stefan (Sharlto Copley) betrays Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) to become king, she curses his child so that when she grows Aurora (Elle Fanning) will fall into an endless sleep.

When the film was announced, it was exciting to hear that a live-action Maleficent would come to screen. However, fans of the villain would rather see her at her darkest, not filled with love and sorrow.

Jolie does fantastic with the material provided. However, there are inconsistencies with the script and only three characters – Maleficent, Aurora and Stefan – truly have material to work with.

Final say: Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. ★★☆☆☆
