By changing animation styles and putting puppies at the forefront, One Hundred and One Dalmatians brought Disney out of debt following the expensive Sleeping Beauty.
Pongo (Rod Taylor) tricks his human owner Roger (Ben Wright) into meeting and falling in love with Anita (Lisa Davis), who owns Perdita (Lisa Daniels & Cate Bauer). After they have puppies, Cruella de Vil (Betty Lou Gerson) has them stolen to kill and make into coats.
Cruella is one of Disney’s best villains because her crimes can never be justified. Her greed only makes her worse and killing puppies for fashion is downright evil. She’s fantastically animated and Gerson provides a wonderful voice.
The animation is rougher than previous Disney films, but this set a standard for the next several films – almost all of which have become classics.
Final say: 101% a good time. ★★★★★
