Four months before Waitress took the Broadway stage, composer and lyricist Sara Bareilles released her own versions of the show’s music with What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress.

Throughout her career, Bareilles has proven herself to be an incredible storyteller so she’s perfect to write a Broadway musical. What’s amazing is to hear how much of story is told with the music still sounding very true to Bareilles. The best example comes during “Everything Changes,” which has similarities to her song “Gravity.”

Bareilles later played the lead role in Waitress after original star Jessie Mueller left the cast and Bareilles’ male counterpart on this album, Jason Mraz, also joined the show throughout its run. So, this album acts somewhat as a replacement cast recording. Bareilles and Mraz’s voices blend perfectly together.

Final say: Bareilles is meant to tell stories. ★★★★★
