In its first Broadway revival in over 20 years, The Music Man has fantastic leads and dazzling choreography, but its diverse casting is noticeable for the wrong reason.
Con man Harold Hill (Hugh Jackman) poses as a music professor with a mindset of swindling the residents of River City. Librarian Marian Paroo (Sutton Foster) is skeptical of Hill while he tries to win her over.
Jackman is brilliantly charming and deceptive. Though the key of her music needed modulating, Foster brings her quirks to Marian making her a more developed character.
However, the issue is that the casting is diversified but all principal roles are played by white actors. The only people of color in the show are in the ensemble and that highlights race more than it embraces it.
Final say: A strong revival that could still grow. ★★★★☆
