Moving at a slow but steady pace, Causeway is a deeply affecting drama due to the performances of Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry.

After an explosion in Afghanistan that caused brain injuries, Lynsey (Lawrence) returns home to better herself before redeployment. She meets a mechanic named James (Henry) who lost his leg and nephew in a car crash.

The film is all about human connection, even in the worst of times. Watching these two lost souls find each other as they’re trying to process their trauma is beautiful. Though there’s nothing visually exciting, the magic is in character work.

While Lawrence is remarkable, there’s something about Henry’s presence that makes him the standout. His work is quiet but it’s full of emotion. The two work together fantastically.

Final say: There’s a strong heart in the center of their grief. ★★★★☆
