Though lodged in the somewhat forgotten Disney films of 2002-2008, Treasure Planet is a thrilling adventure with multiple types of animation that provide depth and difference to the usual Disney product.

When Billy Bones (Patrick McGoohan) crash lands in front of the Benbow Inn, he gives Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) a treasure map. Jim and Dr. Delbert Doppler (David Hyde Pierce) commission the RLS Legacy to take them to the treasure, but cyborg John Silver (Brian Murray) leads a mutiny onboard.

What sets this apart from other Disney films of that time is that the antagonist – John Silver – has duality. He’s not just evil, but you see him grow alongside Jim as their characters connect. In presenting him this way (like he is in Treasure Island), his complexity will conflict you in a good way.

Final say: Flawed, but exciting. ★★★☆☆
