Tina is a run of the mill bio-musical capturing the life of the legendary Tina Turner. What sets it apart is the truly wonderful story of resilience that ends on the highest of notes.
Tina Turner (Naomi Rodgers & Zurin Villanueva, alternating) – then known as Anna Mae Bullock – is discovered by Ike Turner (Garrett Turner), who then shares an abusive professional and personal relationship with her. When Tina leaves Ike, she struggles on her own until her ultimate comeback in the 1980s.
Seeing Villanueva in the title role was breathtaking. Her voice soars to the rafters and brings the house down.
However, production elements suffer. The sound is often muffled from being too loud, the set is small for the stage while the book makes a mess of fitting in the songs.
Final say: Tina’s performance was simply the best. ★★★☆☆
