Book: The Song of Achilles

By leaning into the long-rumored romantic relationship between Achilles and Patroclus, author Madeline Miller not only gives readers a brilliant modern take on the Trojan War, but also a beautiful romance.

Forced into exile as a young prince, Patroclus goes to Phthia where he meets Achilles – a prince from King Peleus and the sea nymph Thetis. When Achilles declares Patroclus his companion, they go to train with Chiron before being summoned to the Trojan War.

At its heart, this is a coming-of-age novel and while the romance is at its core, being able to experience Patroclus’ (and in turn Achilles’) growth into men and heading to war sets it apart from other novels. While the romantic connection – which is gorgeously written from discovery to parting – always remains, the story grows beyond it.

Final say: A timeless tale breathes new life. ★★★★★
