Changes are abounded at Downton Abbey after the death of Matthew (Dan Stevens) at the end of season three. At times, it almost feels like a new show with new directions and faces.
Mary (Michelle Dockery) takes her place in the running of the estate. Violet (Maggie Smith) and Rosamund (Samantha Bond) help Edith after she runs into personal troubles, while Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) attempts to help Anna (Joanne Froggatt) after she has her own troubles.
While it seems somewhat unfair not to see Mary have a happy ending, it’s fun to watch Tom Cullen and Julian Ovenden duke it out as her new suitors.
New cast member Lily James provides a new light amongst the younger women that went out with Jessica Brown Findlay’s departure. Her character Rose is daringly wild.
Final say: A new era at Downton. ★★★★☆
